Pb, in-8, 244 pp., index, bibliography. Poverty as a mixture of lack of education, no property of land, oppression of religion, clearance, inhumanity of the British landlords/landowners, alcoholism, etc.
The government adopted a system of workhouses (the first was opened in Cork in 1840) to frame the problem, not to solve it. The exploitation of children was considered normal. Adoption of orphans was considered to bring relief.
